ABOUT THE PERFORMERS

Arms Aloft are four Leftist punks from Eau Claire, Wisconsin.  Ya know the quiet person that sits in the corner that only speaks up once a year, but when they do, they say something inspiring, thoughtful, and profound?  That’s Arms Aloft.  Not the busiest group on the planet, but when the band materializes, the punk scene listens.  They are loud and proud socialists (Alright, alright, alright, just the way we like ‘em), and if there’s ever some wacky Right Wing takeover in America *looks around, laughs nervously* they’re coming for Arms Aloft first.  But good luck taking on this band, as they’re smart, scrappy, and they literally eat from garbage cans.  What a time to be barely alive!

Brendan Kelly is the dude from The Lawrence Arms and The Falcon.  Chicago boy done good.  Sometimes he goes solo and sometimes he soars with a dubious crew called the Wandering Birds.  He’s done a couple LPs and some 7”s with Red Scare, and it’s all pretty freaky stuff: songs about torture, songs about drugs, songs about pervs, songs about serial killers, and songs about your mom.  The recordings are definitely not your typical punk acoustic faire as he works with a full band of deviant collaborators, and the live show has been described as Andy Kaufman goes Kafka, but with songs about your mom.

Sincere Engineer began as a solo project for Deanna Belos, a nervous nerd from the same Chicago burbs that gave the world Slapstick and The Brokedowns.  Red Scare booked her first real live show, supporting labelmates Brendan Kelly and Sam Russo at Double Door in Chicago.  Not long after we released her debut album and got her on some big festivals and a tour opening for The Lawrence Arms.  Next thing we know, she’s got herself a full band and a big record deal with them fancy folks out in Smellay!  The band continues to grow and keeps a busy tour schedule, and we continue to sing along and cheer for Sincere Engineer…

Dylan Martinson is a 25 year old, Chetek WI, based singer/songwriter. He started playing guitar his second semester of his freshman year of college and hasn’t looked back.He’s had the privilege of playing all across the region and opening for the likes  Chris Kroeze. Last year he played over 100+ shows throughout the region.  Playing a wide variety of music across multiple genres and decades. His singles "Someone Like Me" and "Enough" can both be heard on streaming platforms.

ABOUT OUR HEADLINER

A standup comedian, writer and performer currently based in Minneapolis, Ben Katzner finds humor in his upbringing – born in Atlanta, adopted at a young age and raised in a small-town Minnesota – and explores how it influences his views on relationships, family and everyday life. Ben has opened for comedians such as Gary Gulman, Kyle Kinane, Kelsey Cook and Chad Daniels and has participated in numerous comedy festivals including: the Limestone Comedy Festival, 10,000 Laughs Comedy Festival, Hell Yes Fest in New Orleans, the Harlem Comedy Festival and the Orlando Indie Comedy Festival. Katzner’s debut graphic novel, "Hello, My Name is Poop", was published by Wonderbound books in 2021.

Pearl Rose is a comedian recently returned to her hometown in Minnesota. She has performed at venues up and down the East coast, such as Good Company Theater in Philadelphia and the DC Improv in Washington D.C. She has opened for nationally touring headliners including Joe List, Carmen Lynch and Jon Dore. Pearl has performed in several festivals such as the Underground Comedy Festival and the Kennedy Center's District of Laughs Festival. She has been featured in the Washington Post's The Lily.

In "Improvised Game Show," three improvisers put their wit and spontaneity to the test as they tackle unpredictable prompts. They’ll earn the audience’s praise with their creativity and skill, but only one will emerge as the ultimate winner.

Out in Front are a Los Angeles based band that serendipitously met at a tennis club-where they are all tennis pros. Starting off by jamming in a garage, the three band members, Madie, Isaiah, and Ryen, immediately knew they had something together. Coming from all different roots and having various tastes in music, the band has unique inspirations. Nonetheless, they all have one major thing in common– their passion for music. Blending Southern California sounds with pop- rock influences, Out in Front makes music that sparks the desire to take a trip down the PCH.

The band’s songs are threaded together with a theme of starting out and taking a chance on yourself and their individual stories enhance that idea.

Madie Renner is the lead vocalist and lyricist of Out In Front. Madie started playing piano and songwriting at a very young age in Iowa. As a senior in high schoool she scrapped plans to play college tennis and study music therapy in Iowa  and was accepted into the prestigious Songwriting Program at Belmont University. Taking a chance on herself after graduation, and knowing she would need to leave her hometown behind, she moved across the country to LA.

Isaiah Volk started playing drums for fun as a young kid but always as a hobby. After finising school on a tennis scholarship he got his pilots license and was working as a tennis pro when he met Madie, found they both loved music and started jamming in his garage.  They knew they had the start of something special. 

Ryen Wagner, another pro at the club and another college tennis player,  grew up playing bass with a wide range of influences. Ryen completed the trio and OUT IN FRONT was born!

The band caught the attention of influencial producer Drew Allsbrook (AJR, Ice Spice, Doja Cat) who  joined forces to complete their debut tracks and are currently working on a full length release.

Two Rivers continues their monthly residency at The Plus- playing once every month - now on Thursdays.

Two Rivers is Sue Orfield on tenor sax and piano, Randy Sinz on acoustic guitar, bass and vocals, Gregg Wheeler on electric guitar, harmonica and vocals and Tommy Wieseler on acoustic guitar, keys and vocals- and who knows? Maybe some special guests will drop in as well!
You'll hear tunes spanning all genres and eras. Great people, great cocktails and food.

It all starts at 5:30pm - free and all ages.

Ryan Kahl is a stand-up comedian based out of Minneapolis. He is fun-loving, well-meaning, and very nice. Ryan started performing when he was 18, and has since opened for Sean Patton, and some of the best comics in the Midwest.

He is a co-founder and co-producer of Clear Water Comedy, a comedy collective in his hometown of Eau Claire, WI. He was also selected as a 2016 Best Of performer at the 10,000 Laughs Comedy Festival in Minneapolis, MN.

DESCRIPTION

Since meeting in 2020, bassist Jeremy Boettcher and pianist Paul Hecht have been collaborating in
various bands, building on their shared love of the jazz tradition their wide-ranging musical curiosity.
Tonight they are joined by ace Twin Cities artists Pete James Johnson on drums and featured guest, tap
dancer Ashley Gonzalez.

Ashley Gonzalez is a tap dance performer, choreographer, and instructor whose work has been
recognized nationally and around the world. Some of her performances include the 2018 Governor’s Ball
Emmy Awards in Los Angeles, the 2018 MLBA All Star Pre Party Concert in Washington DC, and she has
also received awards for her tap performances in Seoul, South Korea and Offenburg, Germany. Gonzalez
was featured in the book Dance Across the USA by Jonathan Givens. Gonzalez regularly performs in a
variety of settings in the Twin Cities area, and is a member of the performing arts collective Rhythm
Street Movement.

Jeremy Boettcher is one of the most in-demand bassists in the upper Midwest, known for his virtuosity,
his iron beat, and his warm musical sympathy and sense of humor. Boettcher performs regularly around
the world, particularly in collaboration with renowned pianist Richard Johnson and saxophonist Sharel
Cassity and in association with Jazz and Lincoln Center. Boettcher also plays in various indie music
projects, notably Bon Iver drummer S. Carey’s solo project.

Paul Hecht performs regularly throughout the Midwest, with groups based in Chicago and Eau Claire.
Hecht’s background is unusual: he had a career as an English professor before moving into music full-
time in 2020. Hecht’s book about English poetry at the end of the sixteenth century, What Rosalind
Likes, was published in 2022 by Oxford University Press. He continues to write on various subjects,
mostly musical, on his Substack, ZLR. A first recording of his original compositions, Pyrography, will be
released on ears & eyes records in 2025.

Pete James Johnson is a drummer, composer and educator in the Twin Cities, most often seen playing
jazz and improvised music but is at home in a variety of musical worlds. He has performed with local
artists such as the Zacc Harris Group, Bryan Nichols, Javier Santiago, Omar Abdulkarim, and Dosh, as well
as international artists such as the Bob Mintzer Big Band, Alan Broadbent, Russ Ferrante, Alan Pasqua,
Ambrose Akinmusire, and Bob Sheppard.

Andy Erikson’s love of cats and unicorns is only surpassed by her love of performing standup comedy. In 2015 Andy placed in the top 5 on NBC’s Last Comic Standing and in 2016 she played Chanel #7 on Ryan Murphy’s television series Scream Queens on Fox. Andy intertwines silly one-liners with whimsical stories in a playful but thought-provoking way. She was once a semi-finalist for the Andy Kaufman award and has won several comedy competitions and performed at prestigious festivals over the years. Her favorite thing about comedy is making friends.

Luke Pauling is a Minneapolis-based comic who was just looking for an excuse to leave his apartment. Cue to today, he’s gone from appreciating stand up comedy from the sidelines to writing and rewriting jokes on his boss's dime (and will continue to do so as long as no one tells on him). Taylor Williamson is a comedian best known for being runner up on America’s Got Talent. He started performing standup while he was a senior in high school in Del Mar, California. Soon after, he moved to LA and became the youngest comic to perform on The Late Late Show. He’s also appeared on shows like AGT: All Stars, Comedy Central’s Live at Gotham, Last Call With Carson Daly, The Nick Cannon Show, and he was a semi finalist on Last Comic Standing.
Taylor’s been interviewed on podcasts like “WTF with Marc Maron” and “Bad Friends with Bobby Lee & Andrew Santino.” His comedy can be heard in his debut album titled “Laughter? I Hardly Know Her!” His brand new special, “Live At The Comedy Store”, is now streaming free on YouTube.

MJ Lenderman is a songwriter born and raised in Asheville, North Carolina. The anatomy of an MJ record might go something like this: warped pedal steels and skuzzed out guitar; a voice reminiscent of the high-lonesome warble of a choirboy. Songs snake their way from a lo-fi home recording to something glossier made with longtime friends at Asheville’s Drop of Sun studios, but the recording setting doesn’t seem to matter much – at its core, a Lenderman song rings true.

Geoffrey Asmus began performing stand-up in 2013 immediately after wasting $143,548 in college.

Soon after Geoffrey was selected as a ‘New Face’ performer at Just For Laughs Montreal and featured on FOX’s ‘Laughs’ and Kevin Hart’s LOL Network.

Geoffrey is a regular at the world famous Comedy Cellar and has opened for Sam Morril, Mark Normand, Dan Soder, Daniel Sloss, Dave Attell and Ari Shaffir among others.

In 2021 Geoffrey released his first album “Prodigal Little Bitch” through 800lb Gorilla Records. The album went to #1 on iTunes and is played nationwide on SiriusXM radio.

Geoffrey also co-hosts the "You’re An Idiot” podcast which is the only funny podcast and is better than the Joe Rogan Experience.

Beginning her career at 19 years old in Minneapolis Minnesota, she has since toured all over the United States and through 5 European countries, at venues ranging from packed theaters and clubs to small-town dive bars and bowling alleys. She is a paid regular at the nationally renowned Acme Comedy Club, was voted 'Racket Magazine’s 2022 Minnesota Comic to Watch,’ is twice featured in the Minnesota Star Tribune, has opened for Michael Che, Dave Attell, and Big Jay Oakerson, and most impressively, got deported from Germany in December of 2022. Bryan Miller renounced all seriousness and quit his job as a newspaper editor to move to Minneapolis, Minnesota, and try standup comedy in 2008. In his first year he was a finalist in Acme’s Funniest Person in the Twin Cities contest, and just two years later he was spotted by Craig Ferguson, who invited him to do a spot on CBS’s The Late Late Show, where he made his network television debut in April 2012. Every week he writes football jokes for Costaki Economopoulos’s “Quick Snaps” podcast and radio segment, which is featured on the Bob & Tom Show and can be found on iTunes. He’s also a recurring opener for Minnesota Public Radio’s comedy variety show Wits. Bryan has appeared in the Great American Comedy Festival, the Boston Comedy Festival, and the Laughing Skull Comedy Festival, can be heard on Sirius/XM radio, and is featured on the Stand Up! Records compilation album “Nerd Alert.”

MOTHERWIND

Hidden deep along the river bends of Eau Claire, Wisconsin, you’ll find Motherwind. Forming in August of 2020, the quartet—Anthony Frey (vocals, guitar), Nate Rogers (lead guitar), Michael Hargens (bass), Jackson Kleingartner (drums)—has already taken lengthy strides in revealing their primal artistry to the masses, despite their formation amid the coronavirus pandemic. The group originally began writing songs under the name “The Color Scene” at a horse sanctuary owned by a mutual friend. Since then, the band has branded themselves under the new name with an electrifying live show in their arsenal. The young group’s 70s-bred roots and alt-groove sound has left the floors of rock clubs and bars tremoring, and the concoction of psychedelic riffs and hair-raising chord progressions leaves their audiences stirred. Motherwind has shared the stage with the likes of Crobot, The Black Moods, Royal Bliss and P.O.D., and the band is consistently invited back to venues. With a tour schedule during the summer of 2021, the young group has already shown efficacy in creating a blazing reputation within the up-and-coming rock scene. Current focuses of the band include constructing their own recording studio above a weight training facility, releasing their breakthrough EP, maintaining a consistent touring schedule and of course finding new and exciting ways to bring people together with their tasty brand of alt-rock.

Milwaukee icon Pat McCurdy has been entertaining audiences in Wisconsin, the Midwest, and across the nation for decades. He brings his unique style of improvisational comedy, music and audience interaction to venues large and small. Pat consistently fills up venues and festivals with his fans, known as "Patheads. They are very enthusiastic, and many know every word of his songs. "Patheads" are fans that have seen him dozens of times, singing and dancing along to every song. It's a fun show for all.

Pat did not let the pandemic slow him down. In March 2020, Pat began his weekly virtual "Shelter in Place" shows from his living room and garage. Fans wrote in requests, birthday greetings, and anniversary acknowledgements to keep the shows interactive. Pat's Shelter in Place shows have been seen by nearly one million viewers from as far away as Paris, the UK and Australia. The pandemic inspired Pat to write a new song every week. He put these all together in his latest CD, Now is Not the Time for Sad Songs: A Pandemic 2020 Souvenir. The CD hit #1 on the Worldwide Radio Indie Alliance Album of the Year charts.

James Stanley started his journey in stand up comedy in 2013 at 16 years old. Within a few years James was hired as a house emcee at the Joke Joint Comedy Club and a couple years after that he was hired at the famous Acme Comedy Company.

James has opened for names in the comedy world such as Sean Patton, Stavros Halkias, Dusty Slay, Geoffrey Asmus, Nimesh Patel, Keslsey Cook, and more. In 2021 James was featured in Comics to Watch MN.

Since 2010, FMDown has been peppering the Midwest with their distinctly unique, yet familiar blend of rock and roll.

2012 saw the release of their debut, "White Noise", which received positive reviews from various online music blogs. The tracks "Polarized" and "All The Things You Wish You Were" remain popular standouts at live outings.

2013 unleashed "Consolation Prize", with a further showcase on the band's dynamics. Songs like "New Years Day" and "Our Favorite Sins" displayed how the band had grown from a songwriting perspective.

In 2017, the band released "Select All Delete", a compilation of songs written over the previous two years, through two different lineup changes, and is their most dynamic recording to date.

2019 led to the band's fourth studio album, Maybe We Could Get Somewhere If We Could Just Be Somewhere Else, in which they provided a very well rounded rock and roll experience ranging from pure adrenaline songs like 'Looker' and 'PTI'  to a laid back Tom  Petty'esque tune like 'Accusations & Evidence' to straight up the gut rock songs like 'Earn Your Stripes' and 'Bad Design.' It's an album any rocker can love.

2020 rang in the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, and with it, the guys took to social media and created a YouTube series called 'Live and Alone.' Following proper protocol and having the practice space in which to pull it off, the boys created a live music experience via the internet, bringing three songs a week to the listener as well as some odd self-made commercials and comedy bits. The material from this video series also led to the band's first live album of the same name, Live and Alone, featuring selections from the series.

In September of 2022, the band released their fifth studio album, Paper Bridges, after a long awaited hiatus due to both the pandemic and medical reasons. The EP is yet another showcase of the band's ability to not lock themselves into any given sound, any given subgenre of rock.

FMDown provides an energetic and distinctive (and usually full-production) original music show that is guaranteed to get people talking.

Parker Reed and the Lucid Dreamers, a five-piece dramatic rock band from Eau Claire, Wisconsin.

The Over Unders

The Over Unders are an Alt Rock duo from Eau Claire, Wisconsin, comprised of brothers Sam (Guitar and Vocals) and Matthew (Drums) Hellman. Their fresh and enthusiastic take on classic rock n’ roll is often likened to their major influences who fall all along the diverse spectrum of power pop and classic alternative. Principal songwriter Sam Hellman’s favorites come through most, giving most of their tunes a “Big Star meets Replacements, by way of Gin Blossoms” vibe. Think Old 97’s and Ted Leo too, as these are common names mentioned when describing the Over Unders’ simple but complete sound. Perhaps what sets them apart from their Eau Claire peers most is their simultaneous willingness to shoot for the stars with anthemic stadium rock songs that seek to emulate their heroes REM, and very fittingly, former brother rock giants Oasis. Above all else, The Over Unders value well crafted songs that deliver honest confessions and observations about life. Their 2022 EP No Soap Radio went to work for them, landing them a spot at legendary Minneapolis rock club 7th St. Entry, as well as an upcoming slot at Cadott, Wisconsin's Rockfest. The band is poised to keep the momentum rolling with new singles out in July and August.

Whether singing a jazzy-folk number, belting a sassy blues, crooning a hushed ballad, or rocking out on one of her trademark rhythmic earthy grooves, Alice is a vocalist that moves people. A kick-ass guitarist as well, whether playing solo or with a band “Force of Nature” her acoustic guitar conjures pecussive poly-rhythms, bass lines, and melodies that perfectly frame her voice.

With seventeen solo recordings and 35 years of touring to her credit her songwriting has covered a lot of ground. Her early albums are filled with folky anthems to the earth and as her music has grown so has her ability to express universal themes touching on politics and environmental concerns, human relationships and emotions all in a very musical way. Di Micele cannot be pegged into one category or style as she is truly unique. On her latest album “Interpretations: Vol 1,” Alice shares her skill as an interpreter of other people’s songs including tunes from Neil Young, Kate Wolf, Rev. Gary Davis, Sting, the Grateful Dead, Tom Petty, Christine McVie, and Abbey Lincoln.

In 1988, Alice Di Micele released her first album “Make A Change” and started touring the country performing at venues large and small: from Festivals such as the Strawberry Music Festival, the Kate Wolf Music Festival, and the Oregon Country Fair to venues such as the Kuumbwa Jazz Center in Santa Cruz, the Roseland Theater in Portland, and the Fineline Music Cafe in Minneapolis to countless coffeehouses, pubs, cafes, community halls, and even house concerts. Alice has shared the stage with folks like Bonnie Raitt, Joan Baez, Arlo Guthrie, Janis Ian, David Grisman, Steve Winwood, JJ Cale, Michael Franti, Rising Appalachia, and many more. A true Independent musician, she has gained critical acclaim from press, a dedicated fan-base, and her contemporaries all the without the help of a record contract, agency, or management.

ABOUT OUR HEADLINER

Evan Hull was born and raised in Denver, Colorado as the middle child in a far too supportive Jewish family. Now living in Chicago, he performs on stages all over Chicago and the greater midwest with tales of vagrants kicking birds, misguided body dysmorphia, and other anecdotes told from the perspective of a “well-adjusted” 27-year-old. Mothers and grandmothers love him.

Performers:

- Plan a 5 minute set. Seriously. Do not go longer (it is better to do three minutes than five minutes)... you'll get more details at showtime.

- Sign up begins at 7pm. Show up, come find us, and we will fill you in on the rest.

- Want to be on show? ***YOU must be here by 8pm.***

-Where you perform in the show order is based on when you show up.   The first person to register gets to choose where they go in the order!  The earlier you arrive, the more control you have over your placement on the show.   Must be present to register- no friend sign up, texts, messages, emails, or other manner of registration will be accepted.  

-Anyone and everyone is allowed to perform. We strongly encourage you to try out one of the open mic nights in the area to practice before the show! All are eligible to win as long as they have never been paid for a performance at a Clear Water Comedy show in the past.

OTHER IMPORTANT DETAILS

-Clear Water Comedy and The Plus are absorbing your ticket fees. Buy in advance, and pay no fees, and receive a free drink at the show!

-Online sales close at 6pm the day of the show. Tickets can be purchased at the door following this time. The show is not- we repeat, NOT sold out unless there is a separate announcement. If you miss the window for online sales, just arrive when the doors open to assure your entry. Please do not call the restaurant.

-You do not need to purchase a ticket if you are performing. Just register at check-in, and you are good to go.

-The Plus is a full service restaurant. Drinks and food are available and can be ordered before or during the performance.
