Fungi Foray at the Farm: Mushroom Walk & Talk with Tavis

Join mushroom expert Tavis Lynch for a short class and then a foraging walk through the woods to ID WI's mushrooms, trees and more!

Tavis is brining his foraging expertise back to the farm right at the start of the peak season! This will be his FOURTH time here. The first two were very dry and 2024 was very wet. Each year is totally unique. We're excited to see what this year brings!

The event will start at 2pm with about a half hour presentation to prepare everyone for the day and to help you be successful on your own foraging quests in the future. After the talk, you'll head for the hills for about 2 hours to see what you can find - there's so much more out there than you think - you just gotta know where to look!

Love mushrooms or just want to learn more about what's growing wild all around you? Then this is a not to be missed event! Beginner to expert will enjoy this time of learning and exploring with one of WI's foremost experts.

Well-behaved children are welcome to attend - must have one adult supervisor per child.

In order to ensure everyone has a good time, additional instructors will be brought in to keep foraging group size low but that means you need to save your spot asap so we know what to expect and can plan accordingly.

Online sales end at midnight the day before the event. Tickets available at the door for $5 more, unless a “Sold Out” announcement is made.

Ticket purchases are non-refundable, the event will go on rain or shine so dress accordingly!

In 2024, 80 mushrooms were identified after just a couple hours, including very rare varieties (Arcyria cinerea var. digitata), lots of edibles (oyster, bolete, chanterelles, corals, puffballs), some very pretty ones (Laccaria amethystina), some unique ones (mycena haematopus or Bleeding Fairy Helmet), some more fun common named ones (old man of the woods, dead man's fingers) and some very poisonious ones (pseudosperma rimosum). 

Here's what he had to say about his first foray at TF:
"In August of 2019, a group of mushroom hunters embarked on a journey up the big hill at Together Farms. The conditions were bone dry, but we still managed to rustle up about 40 different species of mushroom. From the delicious Cinnabar Chanterelle to the rare Lactarius subserifluus, there was plenty to see. Everyone learned about our native mushrooms and a few edible plants. The walk wasn't nearly as grueling as we expected and even the children enjoyed the quick frolic on the woods. I am looking forward to returning and seeing what else the big hill has to offer."

About Tavis:

Tavis is an avid mycologist and commercial forager and cultivator from northwestern Wisconsin. He has been studying fungi for most of his life and teaches several mycology classes at local colleges. He is a regular guest on Wisconsin Public Radio and has been featured on "Around the Farm The Farm Table" on PBS. He has been a commercial mushroom forager for many years and has been cultivating mushrooms on a large scale for about 20 years. He is the author of Mushroom Cultivation (Quarto) and the co-author of The Beginner's Guide to Mushrooms (Quarto).
